Who we are

Baology Prep runs an online USA Biology Olympiad preparation course. We are a small business. We are not affiliated with the USA Biology Olympiad or the Center for Excellence in Education. Write to us at our contact address with any question about this page.

What this website collects

Every page on this site uses Google Analytics. It sets cookies in your browser. It tells Google which pages you opened, roughly where you are, and what device and browser you used. We only look at the totals. We never send Google your name or your email address. We do not use it for advertising. Google explains what it does with this data at How Google uses information from sites that use our services.

You can block Analytics by refusing cookies in your browser, using a tracker blocker, or installing Google's opt-out add-on. The site still works if you do.

Blocking all of Google is different. The registration form, the class calendar, the video embeds and our fonts all come from Google. None of them will load.

We store one thing in your browser, namely if you close the countdown popup on our home page, we set a flag in your browser's local storage which stops the popup from reappearing. The flag records only that you dismissed it. It never leaves your device. It stays until you clear your browser data.

We run no advertising trackers and no retargeting trackers. Nothing on this site is paid placement. Some pages do load files from other companies, and those companies see your IP address and your browser when they do.

  • Google Fonts, on every page
  • Google Forms, for the registration form on the sign-up page
  • Google Calendar, on the syllabus page
  • YouTube, on the demo page and on one blog post
  • jsDelivr and Cloudflare, which serve icons on some pages

The registration form loads before you type anything, and the video embeds load with the page, not when you click. Each company handles that data under its own policy, not ours.

We do not respond to Do Not Track signals. There is no agreed standard for what responding would mean. The opt-out above still works.

What the registration form collects

Registration runs on a Google Form. It asks for:

  • the level you are enrolling in
  • the student's first name, last name and email address
  • the student's grade for the coming school year
  • which biology course the student has already taken
  • your region, and your city and state
  • a parent or guardian's name, email address and phone number
  • how you heard about us
  • whether you want the free demo week

The student's high school is optional. A parent's WeChat ID is optional. Everything else is required. Responses are stored in Google Drive under our account.

We use all of it to place the student in the right level, to contact you about the course, and to run the class. The demo question is our record of whether you asked for the free week. We ask instead of assuming.

Course fees are sent by Zelle, from your bank to ours. We never see card or bank account numbers. We do receive the payer's name and a record of the payment. Classes run on Moodle, and all recordings are posted on our Moodle course page.

Students under 18

Most of our students are 13 to 18 years old. That is why the form asks for a parent or guardian's contact details. We will discuss a student's enrollment, progress or data with that parent or guardian on request. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.

Are you a parent or guardian? Write to us. We will show you what we hold about your child, correct it, or delete it.

Photographs and quotes

Our gallery and testimonials pages show photographs of students and staff, and quotes from students. Quotes are published with the author's permission. Photographs are published with permission where we had it. The rest were taken at public events like competitions and expos, so some of them include people who are not our students.

Are you in one of those photographs or did you write one of those quotes, and would like to be removed? Write to us and we will take it off the site.

Some things limit what we can do:

  • Many of the photographs are group shots, so removing one person takes the whole picture down
  • This website is built from a public code repository, so a removed image can stay in that repository's history and in other companies' caches after it leaves the site

What we never do

We do not sell your information. We do not rent it. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not send marketing email to people who never asked for it. We share data with a company only when running the course needs it, and only with the companies named above.

Seeing or deleting your data

Write to our contact address and ask. We will tell you what we hold, correct it, or delete it. Normally that takes under 30 days. There is no form to fill in. You do not need to cite a law.

We may ask you to confirm who you are first, usually by writing from the email address on the registration. Otherwise we would hand a student's data to anyone who asked.

We may have to keep payment records for as long as tax rules require.

Class recordings on Moodle, and the recorded classes on our demo page, are group recordings. Removing one student means taking the whole recording down. Ask and we will tell you what we can do.

We can only delete what we hold. We cannot reach into Google Analytics or your bank on your behalf, and we will say so when something is out of our hands.

Changes

If we change how any of this works, we will update this page and the dates at the top.
