Jason's USABO Experience: Introduction

By Jason Wang Last updated on August 31, 2025

Introduction

Hi everyone! This article is (hopefully) the start of a series recounting my experience with USABO, college applications, and everything else high schoolers might be curious about.

For those of you who don't already know me as a TA from our course, I qualified for USABO finals 4 times between 2021-2024.

I went to camp three times in high school, but only 1.5 times in-person (a story for another time). In 2022 and 2024, I was lucky enough to qualify for Team USA, most recently winning a gold medal at the 35th IBO in Kazakhstan and coming 3rd overall.

The experiences I will talk about are personal and may not apply to everyone, but I hope that sharing my story can be helpful to highschoolers who are either starting their USABO journey or thinking about college applications. I remember being in similar shoes just a few years ago, and I am truly grateful to everyone who helped me along my journey.

I would like to thank and dedicate this blog to: Kevin, Joseph, Roy, Kaiden, Ian, Caleb, Andrew Wu, Greycen, Larry, fiftytwo, and Laura Z, among many others.
